UBA has started its annual National Essay Competition in Nigeria for the 2022 edition. This is to help ease the anxiety in most families who are trying to ensure that educational gaps do not emerge as a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The competition aims of boosting the reading culture and encouraging healthy and intellectual competition amongst secondary school students in Nigeria and across Africa.

For this year, the competition has been organized in such a way that participants will have ease of access. They can participate from the comfort of their homes through the introduction of a digital submission portal.

Why UBA Foundation National Essay Competition?

The National essay competition aims at improving the knowledge base of senior secondary school students in Nigeria. Allowing them to express themselves and write creatively.

In addition, students get the opportunity to win prizes in the form of educational grants to study in any university of their choice on the African continent. Apart from Nigerian students, other African countries do have UBA essay competitions.

A unique component of this year’s edition is that money prizes have been increased by 33 percent. This means that the first prize winner will get an educational grant higher than the previous year’s prize.

How Much Does UBA Foundation National Essay Competition Worth?

Winners of the UBA Foundation competition receive cash prizes according to their position.

  • 1st Prize: N2,500,000 or its local currency equivalent towards university tuition/ fees
  • 2nd Prize: N2,000,000 or its local currency equivalent towards university tuition/ fees
  • 3rd Prize: N1,500,000 or its local currency equivalent towards university tuition/ fees

The Rules And Procedures

As an applicant, you are to scan and send in your entries adhering to the following rules and procedures:

  • Be a student in any of the Nigerian Senior Secondary schools.
  • Attach photocopies of their original birth certificates or photocopies of an international passport data page.
  • Submit an essay that is handwritten. The essay must not exceed 750 words.
  • Then, submit their complete contact information. This includes School name and address, residential address, phone number, and email address.
  • Ready to study in an African University.
  • Ensure they apply before the deadline.

UBA Foundation National Essay Competition 2022 Application Procedure

For this year’s competition, the topic chosen focuses on helping to promote creative and analytical thinking in students.

The essay topic selected is 

“Do you think that the lockdown during the Covid-19 pandemic was an essential measure in spite of the hardship it has brought economically? What would you have done differently and why?”

You are expected to write with pen and paper, then scan. Upload the scanned copies alongside your ID on the digital portal at www.ubagroup.com/national-essay-competition.

You can also submit the handwritten essays at any UBA office close to you if you want. Then, after entries have been made, a distinguished panel of judges made up of professors from reputable Nigerian Universities will review all applications.

Then shortlists 12 best essays for further assessment. In the second stage, the 12 finalists will write a second supervised essay after which, 3 best essays will be selected as the overall winners.
